Bon Voyage to Roubaix — An invitation to discover the city's emblematic places through the sensitive prism of the inhabitants' experience

Background

The Lille World Design Capital 2020 event was an opportunity to collaborate with Ville Renouvelée and lille—design to rethink the transitional space that is the car park at Roubaix train station.

In association with the Graphites collective (Karen Fioravanti, Camille Hamard and Chloé Wizla), our proposal is based on a simple idea: to encourage users to discover the city as soon as they get out of their car, through the voices of its inhabitants.

Equipped with an audio recorder and a large map of Roubaix, the Graphites collective ventured out to connect with the people of Roubaix, gathering emotional spots in the city: places that are rejuvenating, surprising, inspiring and welcoming.

Each participant was encouraged to pinpoint these emotional places and contribute to creating a sensitive map.

Graphites engaged with over 60 individuals (including children and adults) and gathered more than 200 stories about 65 different locations in Roubaix.

The locations and stories were used to create a system of graphic forms based on the organisation of the car park (4 floors and a rooftop). A typeface family of 32 weights along with illustrations drawn by Kylab complete this corpus of forms.

More than 50 areas of the car park, as well as the floor of the top level, have been painted.
